YOUTH ENGAGEMENT SUBCOMMITTEE
The West Windsor Democrats Youth Engagement Subcommittee brings together high school and college students, members of the West Windsor Municipal Democratic Committee, and local Democratic leaders to create meaningful opportunities for young people to participate in civic life.
Our goal is simple: help young people learn how government and elections work, connect them with opportunities to participate, and give them the space and support to contribute, organize, and lead.
The subcommittee is designed to be student-led and adult-supported, with young participants helping shape its priorities, programs, and activities.
Our Mission
The Youth Engagement Subcommittee works to engage, educate, and empower West Windsor high school and college students to participate in civic life, understand government and elections at every level, develop leadership skills, and contribute to the future of the Democratic Party and the broader community.
While West Windsor is our starting point, civic engagement does not stop at the municipal level. Participants can learn about and become involved with government, elections, campaigns, and public policy at the local, county, state, and federal levels.
We want to create a welcoming entry point for students who are already active in politics and civic life, as well as those who are simply curious and do not yet know where to begin.
Possible activities include:

Conversations with elected officials, community leaders, organizers, and advocates

Campaign volunteering and voter outreach

Connecting with other youth civic and Democratic organizations across Mercer County and New Jersey
The specific activities of the subcommittee will continue to evolve based on the interests and ideas of the students who participate.
Why Youth Engagement Matters
West Windsor already has a growing generation of young voters.
Current voter registration data show that more than 700 West Windsor residents under the age of 20 are already entering the electorate.
But civic engagement begins well before someone casts their first ballot.
Young people can attend public meetings, volunteer on campaigns, register or pre-register to vote when eligible, serve as student board workers, advocate on issues they care about, participate in community organizations, and help shape conversations about the future of their community.
Just as importantly, civic organizations need to listen to young people.
The Youth Engagement Subcommittee is not intended simply to bring students into existing activities designed by adults. We want young participants to help identify the issues they care about, suggest new ways to engage their peers, and take meaningful leadership roles in the work.
Building Future Leaders
The West Windsor Municipal Democratic Committee is part of the Mercer County Democratic Committee and the broader Democratic Party organization.
That creates opportunities for students to learn not only about government, but also about how political parties, campaigns, and grassroots organizations work.

Participants will also have opportunities to connect with organizations such as the Mercer County Young Democrats, student-led civic organizations, campaigns, elected officials, and community groups.
How the Initiative Started
The idea for the Youth Engagement Subcommittee grew out of a conversation with Sahana Mohindru, a student at West Windsor-Plainsboro High School North, who approached West Windsor Municipal Democratic Committee Chair Dan Weiss looking for ways to become more involved in local Democratic activities and expand opportunities for other young people.
Sahana developed an initial proposal focused on voter registration, civic education, hands-on experience with elections and local government, and building a community of students who remain involved over time.
That proposal became the starting point for this broader effort and reflects exactly the kind of initiative we hope the subcommittee will continue to encourage: young people identifying opportunities, bringing forward ideas, and helping lead the work.

No prior political experience is required.
You do not need to have worked on a campaign, attended a political meeting, or know exactly what you want to do. Curiosity and an interest in making a difference are enough.
The Youth Engagement Subcommittee is growing, and we welcome additional high school and college students with ties to West Windsor who would like to participate.
We also welcome parents, Democratic Committee members, community leaders, and others who may be able to provide mentorship, expertise, introductions, or other support.
